The New Kent Winery and the Club at Viniterra, featuring an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Reese Jones, are 1/4 mile away. Three other local wineries, including Upper Shirley, Saude Creek and Gautier are minutes away as are the magnificent Historic James River Plantation Estates. Memorable horseback riding excursions can be conveniently arranged with our friends at Two Rivers Trail.
Iden, built in about 1840, has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and has been completely renovated for the discriminating guest. With nearly 4000 square feet of living space, there are five large, elegant and comfortable bedrooms, three of which have adjoining/attached baths. There is an additional 1/2 bath off the laundry room. There is a well-appointed beamed gourmet country kitchen with Bosch appliances and gas stove, as well as a laundry room with state of the art washer/dryer, iron and ironing board. There is a large comfortable dining room, a paneled library and parlour with wide-screen DISH TV, a covered porch with wicker furniture and gas BBQ, as well as a sundeck with a classic pergola. Iden is stunningly furnished with period and reproduction furniture and antiques. Every room of the house has an original decorative fireplace. The house is fully air conditioned. Iden is surrounded by open meadows, woodlands and vineyards and boasts pleasant views and many spectacular ancient trees. There are several picturesque outbuildings to explore, including a large classic red barn, log corn crib/aviary, carriage house, one-room school house, caretakers cottage and recently restored ice house. Resident ducks, chickens, pheasants and peafowl add charm to the landscape. Deer, red foxes, bald eagles and wild turkeys are frequent visitors. History buffs will be interested to know that Confederate General JEB Stuart and his cavalry encamped very near the house in June 1862 and his officers paid a visit to the "Harrison Farm" as it was then known..
Relax on the covered porch, explore nearby St. Peter's Church where George and Martha Washington were married. Play a round of golf at Vinaterra. Take a 28 minute drive to downtown Richmond or tour the surrounding wineries and historic sites of Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown. Colonial Downs Horse Racing with 25 races a year, is a few minutes east of Iden Farm. Iden is quiet and peaceful but also convenient to popular tourist destinations. It's the perfect getaway for a large family or group who enjoy nature and an historical setting. No parties or events, but we can provide accommodations for you and your group/family/wedding party up to 10 people.
