The Balboa Peninsula fun zone - 1 mile, Laguna Beach (lots of art and culture) 12 miles, the southern California mountains 1 ½ hours away. Newport harbor (lots of water sports) and if want to see some of the nicest homes and yachts, rent a duffy boat, tour the harbor, and go to dinner to the many restaurants accessible by boat.
